What are Single Use Plastics (SUPs)?
‘Single Use Plastics’ is the term used to describe plastics that are only used once before they are thrown away or recycled. Items that fall under this category include plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers, bottles, and most food packaging.
According to the ‘Plastic Free Challenge’ we produce up to 300 million tons of plastic each year and surprisingly, half of it is disposable! World-wide we only recycle 10-13% of plastic items due to the nature of petroleum-based disposable plastic which makes recycling difficult. This is caused by the need to add new virgin materials and chemicals to do so.
What Are NetBit Doing to Help Eliminate SUPs?
At NetBit, we are taking measures to reduce our single-use plastic consumption by more than 90% from our packaging and supply chain. We are also replacing them with sustainable and cost-effective solutions. Some examples of PE alternative solutions include:
- Glassine paper bags
- Non-woven natural fibre bags
- Bio-degradable (PLA) plastics
- Custom-fit paper sleeves and wrappers
Additional areas of focus:
- Eliminating plastic cable ties and replacing with paper bands
- Redesigned bulk packaging without plastic wraps at the pallet level
- Removing SUPs in work-place
- Removing SUPs in eating areas
- Replacing with sustainable alternatives
