Glassine consists of smooth and glossy paper that provides air, water, and grease resistance. Additionally, it offers resistance against atmospheric elements. Renewable and recyclable, glassine is an eco-friendly alternative to replace non-renewable materials. Glassine is fully recyclable and biodegradable.
PLAs and why they are not a good alternative to PE
PLAs (Polylactic Acid) is a polymer made from renewable resources. Unlike other thermoplastics (petroleum-based) some of the raw materials used in the production of PLAs include corn starch, tapioca roots, or sugarcane. However, its properties are comparable to other plastics in the industry. Due to the uprise in consumer concerns and the desire to reduce the use of plastic, PLAs have made a rapid entrance into the plastic market as a competitive commodity.
Unfortunately, PLAs show slow decomposition rates outside of a controlled environment. Despite PLA being biodegradable, it will only properly decompose within three months after being in specific and controlled composting conditions e.g., commercial compost facilities need to be available. Many PLAs end up on a landfill which will take a staggering 100 to 1000 years to fully decompose.
Moreover, another underlying moral issue lies in its production. We must ask ourselves, for example, whether it is ethical to spend entire crops of corn in the production of bioplastics at the expense of feeding a population in need.
What is NetBit doing to help?
By the 1st of September 2021, we have an aim to reduce single-use plastic consumption by >90% from packaging and replace it with sustainable cost-effective solutions. Moreover, we are on a mission to use only 100% recyclable packaging from sustainable sources. Glassine has proved to be the frontrunner in our eco-friendly efforts due to it being environmentally friendly and durable whilst providing no compromise on quality.
