Background
As of the 1st April 2020, all external PSUs sold into the European Union (EU) must comply with the new European Commission (EC) eco-design requirements 2009/125/EC per EC regulation 2019/1782 of 1st October 2019 which supersedes EC regulation 278/2009.
New Legislation
The European Commission (EC) has now published its revised regulation for the efficiency of all external power supplies (PSUs).
The new EC 2019/1782 regulation means that all PSUs sold into the EU after the 1st of April 2020 must comply with the following requirements:

Meet the new ERP energy efficiency requirements which are now aligned with the US DOE Level VI standard
- Add additional measurement of 10% load efficiency
- PSU specifications must now include a “manufacturers summary table” providing additional information on the PSU supplier and design
- The PSU label / nameplate must include output power, voltage and current to 1 decimal place, i.e. 12V becomes 12.0V and 1A becomes 1.0A (see example photo below)
The image below shows an updated label design that has all the necessary changes listed above. NetBit will also add the DoE VI logo to European power supplies where space allows.
NetBit is now working with its customers to ensure all PSUs intended for distribution in the EU region will comply with this new regulation and ensure a smooth transition.
Please note that there will be an exemption for PSUs intended for service or repair use up to the 30th of June 2025. Existing devices can be supplied as is for service use until that date.
NetBit recommends that any PSU currently purchased for service use only should be replaced with a newer device that is more efficient and complies in full with the new regulations. We can advise on suitable alternatives for any type of CPE application.
New Ecodesign / ErP VI energy efficiency standard
Under the new regulation, the efficiency requirements for EU power supplies are now technically the same as the US DoE VI.
The graph below gives an overview of the ErP VI minimum efficiency requirements compared to the CoC5.1 and CoC5.2 standards. The data shown is valid for 12V DC output voltage PSUs with increasing levels of DC output currents displayed on the x–axis.
