NetBit recognizes that there is an urgent need for change in the way that we design, develop and deliver CPE power supplies to global OEMs and operators.
We have identified four key areas for change that we believe will make the biggest positive impact on the environment and, for the first time, offer our customers a more sustainable alternative.
This short article gives a very brief overview of what these four areas are, why they are important, and why when added together give a holistic or total approach to power supply eco-design.
Power Optimization
Perhaps one of the areas which will have the biggest overall impact on the environment is optimizing the power output to the exact needs of the application. By matching the power output and increasing efficiency it can save a massive amount of wasted power and thereby cut CO2 emissions over the total lifetime of the product.
Whilst there isn’t a single solution that fits all, our new product range of products can be easily customized to give customers very specific peak power output ranges which helps reduce the nominal rating of the power supply whilst still being able to deliver a certain level of power for short periods if required.
Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) Materials
Using PCR materials helps to reduce use of virgin plastics and cut down carbon footprint within the electronics industry. We have successfully made power supply cases from 50% PCR materials that are fully safety compliant.
Our long-term goal is to increase this figure to 80% and we are now working on ways to increase that content further with modified case designs and more robust textures and finishes.
Single-Use Plastics (SUP) Elimination
We are taking measures to reduce our single-use plastic consumption by more than 90% from our packaging and supply chain. We are also replacing them with sustainable and cost-effective solutions. Some examples of PE alternative solutions include:
- Non-woven natural fiber bags
- Bio-degradable (PLA) plastics
- Custom-fit paper sleeves and wrappers
Sustainable packaging
We have made it our goal to use only 100% recyclable packaging from sustainable sources. We are also working to maximize the shipping efficiency of every carton to help customers reduce CO2 emissions and shipping costs. We are also developing new packaging designs specifically for SUP-free transportation to meet international packaging standards.
NetBit has already introduced a number of eco-measures for packaging such as >60% recycled content, vegetable-based inks, and non-bleached kraft cardboard. We are now looking to increase this to >80% recycled content and replace commonly used plastic tapes with paper-based alternatives.
Conclusion
We believe that these four areas will bring about a positive and significant change in the way that we design, develop and deliver our products. Whilst each of these areas can bring its own benefits the whole is far greater than the sum of the parts.
