In the modern age, it has become increasingly important to introduce green measures into business practices. From the products themselves to the packaging that supports them, it is essential that we ensure all processes are eco-friendly and minimise any damage to our environment. Both consumers and businesses alike, are starting to realise the ill effects that both single-use plastics and non-sustainable wood and paper-based packaging products are having on the Earth. Certifications provide key indicators and display merit where businesses have taken steps to ensure their practices adhere to eco-friendly standards. In this article, we are going to focus on FSC (‘Forest Stewardship Council’) and how their certification system works.
What is FSC?
FSC is an international non-profit organisation that is dedicated to promoting responsible forestry. They certify forests across the globe to ensure they meet the highest environmental and social standards. Products that are made from wood and paper from FSC forests are marked with their instantly recognisable signature ‘tick tree’ logo. When this logo is visible, consumers can be confident that they are buying products that are not harming the world’s forests.
Packaging Certification System
The following FSC labeling system explains each certification, designed to help consumers identify materials used in the products they are purchasing.

A = All the forest-based timber or fibre in an FSC 100% product comes from an FSC-certified forest. FSC 100% products are processed using the FSC ‘transfer system’.
B = The timber or fibre in an FSC Mix product is a mixture of some/all of the following:
- Virgin timber/fibre from an FSC-certified forest
- Reclaimed/recycled timber/fibre
- FSC Controlled WoodWhen produced under the FSC percentage system, the product must contain a minimum of 70% FSC-certified wood/fibre and/or recycled input, and the balance must be Controlled Wood. If the product is produced under the FSC credit system, there is no minimum FSC input; however, only a proportion of products can be labelled and/or promoted as FSC certified. Again, the balance must be Controlled Wood.
C = All timber or fibre in an FSC Recycled product must be pre-consumer or post-consumer reclaimed. For wood products produced under the FSC ‘percentage system’ a minimum of 70% of the inputs must be post-consumer reclaimed; there is no threshold for paper products, but all inputs must be verified as reclaimed. FSC Recycled products can also be produced under the FSC ‘credit’ or ‘transfer’ systems.
