At NetBit we have three key focus areas that capture our values.
Our first layer is ‘Planet’. This goes down to very roots of the business as we ensure eco practices from Manufacturing, Shipping, Eliminating power waste and Materials & Packaging. We care about our planet and want to change the way that power supplies are designed and developed.
At NetBit, we recognize that there is an urgent need for change that goes beyond single-use plastics. Manufacturing is part of it, but only the tip of the iceberg. We’re committed to reducing the environmental impact of our power supplies and have identified four key areas for change that we believe will make the biggest positive impact.
1. Design Optimization
Perhaps one of the areas which will have the biggest overall impact on the environment is optimizing the power output to the exact needs of the application. By matching the efficiency versus load curve to the application possible to save a significant amount of wasted power and thereby cut in-use (Scope 3 downstream) CO2 emissions over the total lifetime of the product.
Additionally, our new product ranges can be tailored to give customers specific short term peak power output capability which can enable a reduction to the nominal rating of the power supply whilst still being able to deliver high levels of peak power for short durations. Using this approach, we can make our products physically smaller and reduce the cradle to gate carbon footprint associated with raw materials, manufacture, and transportation of the product to the point of consumption.
2. Post Consumer Recycled (PCR) Materials
Using PCR materials helps to reduce use of virgin plastics and cut down carbon footprint within the electronics industry. We have successfully made power supply cases from 90% PCR materials that are fully safety-compliant.
3. Eliminating Single Use Plastics
- We have reduced our single-use plastic consumption by more than 90% from our packaging and supply chain, replacing them with sustainable and cost-effective solutions. The most common SUP packaging adaptations at the product level are as follows:
- Replacement of PE bag with glassine paper bag,
- As an alternative where QR code scanning is required we typically use custom-fit paper sleeves
- Replacement of plastic cable tie with a paper-based alternative.
4. Sustainable Eco Packaging
We have made it our goal to use only 100% recyclable packaging from sustainable sources. We are also maximizing the shipping efficiency of every carton to help customers reduce CO2 emissions and shipping costs. We are also developing new packaging designs specifically for SUP-free transportation to meet international packaging standards.
NetBit has already introduced several eco-measures for packaging such as >60% recycled content, vegetable-based inks, and non-bleached kraft cardboard. We are now looking to increase this to >90% recycled content and replace commonly used plastic tapes with paper-based alternatives.
Conclusion
We believe that these four areas will bring about a positive and significant change in the way that we design, develop, and deliver our products. Whilst each of these areas can bring its own benefits the whole is far greater than the sum of the parts.
